Engaging in deep encounters between the physical body and the conscious individual self AP&A is recognized for its alternative multi-disciplinary universes that rupture out notions of a sensible humanity. Political yet abstract creations which transform conceptual research into theatrical larger ensemble installations, to be understood as visceral experiences for the spectator.
Artistic Director & Choreographer
Originally from Bogota, Colombia, Andrea Peña is a multidisciplinary artist whose creative practice transverses the fields of art installation, choreography and design. Following a professional dance career that included numerous international tours and stints with two of Canada’s most prominent companies, Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal and Ballet BC, she refocused her energy toward developing and directing multimedia choreographic works.
Peña and her company, have been recognized with numerous awards and commissions, for their visceral and highly rigorous creations, recently including the the Banff Arts Center's Clifford E. Lee Canadian Choreography award 2018 and the Hong Kong International Choreography Festival 2018 award for best choreography. Andrea Peña & Artists tours extensively around the world to Asia, Latin America, Europe, and Canada with productions that include UNTITLED I (2018), ZERO UNO UNO ZERO (2017), KAIROS (2015), and VIUN (2014).
Peña’s approach is known for its difficult choreography as a highly intricate, vulnerable and somatic raw physicality that extends beyond mere movement. Integrated into the corporal and philosophical approach, a great importance is given to working with artists from diverse cultural and artistic backgrounds, thus offering a perpetual dialogue between the various disciplines and individuals involved. Stimulating collaboration among numerous usually disparate fields and companies.
